'The Day War Came' is based on the poem by Nicola Davies, and follows the journey of a child forced to become a refugee when war takes everything they have ever known.
Imagine if, on an ordinary day, war came. Imagine it turned your town to rubble. Imagine going on a long and difficult journey – all alone. Imagine finding no welcome at the end of it. Then imagine a child who gives you something small but very, very precious...
In 2016, when the government refused to allow 3000 child refugees to enter this country, Nicola Davies was so angry she wrote this poem. The book, illustrated by Rebecca Cobb, was then published in partnership with Help Refugees and endorsed by Amnesty International.
We are currently working on a full adaptation of the book into a physical and design led performance.
In October 2019, the Marlowe Theatre kindly supported us as part of their ROAR project enabling us to complete a weeks R&D on the project followed by a public work in progress showing.
